The acclaimed British designer Dame Zandra Rhodes, DBE, joins Fern Mallis for an intimate conversation about her fifty years in fashion.
Both a fashion trailblazer and a consummate textile designer, Rhodes founded her eponymous fashion house in 1969. One of the first designers to send clothes down the runway with slashes and safety pins, she was dubbed “The Princess of Punk” in the 1970s and is credited with helping to put the London fashion scene on the map. Her extensive list of clients has included Princess Diana, Jackie Onassis, Freddie Mercury, Debbie Harry, Lauren Bacall and Elizabeth Taylor. She has counted architect Frank Gehry, Diana Vreeland and Divine among her friends. She is one of the founders of London’s Fashion and Textile museum (which pays tribute to the designer this September with a new exhibition); has recently diversified her career by working on costume and set designs for opera; has recently created a collection of homeware products for Ikea; and will be celebrated this fall by Matchesfashion.com who will launch an exclusive capsule created in collaboration with resort wear label Three Graces, featuring her iconic banana leaf print from the ’70s.
